Abstract
Aim: This study aimed to determine the beliefs in sexual myths among midwifery and nursing students and the influencing factors. Material and Method: This descriptive study was carried out with 464 students. Data were collected using the Personal Information Form and the Sexual Myths Scale, and analyzed with Anova, T-Test, Chi-square, Mann-Whitney U, and Kruskal-Wallis tests in SPSS 23. Results: Of the students, 89% were female, and 83% had received education on sexuality, although 60.6% considered it insufficient. Main sources of information were the internet (25%), books and written materials (21.2%), and friends (16.2%). A total of 80.2% stated that sexuality was not discussed within the family, and 41.8% reported discomfort in talking about it. Among those in clinical practice, 23.2% did not assess sexual functions; 67.5% avoided it because they thought individuals would feel ashamed or refuse, while 24.7% cited lack of knowledge. The mean score of the Sexual Myths Scale was 51.12 ± 15.98 (range 28–140). Higher scores were found among male students, those without or dissatisfied with sexuality education, those whose families did not discuss sexuality, those uncomfortable with sexual issues, students younger than 20 or older than 25, and first-year students (p<0.05). Conclusion: Although scores were low, future midwives and nurses should be free of sexual myths to provide appropriate sexual health education and counselling. Therefore, students need more educational support to strengthen their scientific knowledge of sexuality.
