Abstract

Hebrew and Aramaic Old Testament texts, the Syriac Peshitta from sacred texts, Targum Onkelos, and basic epigraphic documents belonging to other Semitic languages offer a fairly extensive and convenient material for comparative studies with the Qur’an. However, it is striking that, until now, no comprehensive study has been conducted that addresses the semantic fields of common words located within such a wide range across different Semitic languages in a chronological, systematic, and diachronic manner within the context of the Qur’an. This deficiency, which makes it difficult to trace the remnants of the pre-Islamic religious-cultural milieu, renders Naif Yaşar's work titled A Semantic Study of Vocabulary of the Qur’an an original and pioneering study in its field. In the work in question, the words found in the Qur'an are examined comparatively not only with their Arabic roots and derivatives but also together with their equivalents in eleven different languages belonging to the Semitic language family. In this examination, the meanings of words and intertextual transitions have been attempted to be grounded based on sacred texts and fundamental dictionaries in Semitic languages. Thus, the historical development, semantic differentiations, and linguistic context of each word have been revealed in a multi-faceted manner. This situation makes visible not only the semantic framework of the concepts in the Qur’an within the Arabic language but also their deep-rooted relationship with the shared cultural and linguistic heritage among Semitic languages. The comprehensiveness of the comparisons carried out is directly proportional to the robustness of the methodology used. For this reason, determining the scope of the Semitic languages selected in the work, the diversity of the sources consulted, and the methodology applied holds great importance for the academic world. Understanding the comparison of words in the Qur’an with Semitic languages and the fact that the work is a first in its field makes it important to examine the study in a systematic and detailed manner. In this context, especially the analysis of the clause “ ا ” (Alif), which constitutes the introductory section of the work, provides a significant contribution to understanding the diachronic method applied by the author and to comprehending the scholarly contribution the work offers to modern Qur’anic studies.

İslamiyet öncesi dini-kültürel havzanın izlerini sürmeyi zorlaştıran bu eksiklik, Naif Yaşar’ın A Semantic Study of Vocabulary of the Qur’an adlı eserini alanında özgün ve öncü bir çalışma hâline getirmektedir. Bu bağlamda özellikle eserin başlangıç bölümünü oluşturan “ ا ” (Elif) bendinin incelenmesi, yazarın uyguladığı diyakronik yönteminin anlaşılmasına ve eserin modern Kur'an araştırmalarına sunduğu ilmi katkısının kavranmasına önemli bir katkı sağlamaktadır.
