Abstract
News media is not only a tool that conveys violent incidents to the public, but also an important discursive space in which social meanings regarding these incidents are produced. Murder news in which children are positioned as victims or perpetrators makes visible how concepts such as childhood, crime, justice, and social responsibility are constructed within media discourse. Therefore, child-oriented violence news can be considered not only as texts that provide information about judicial processes, but also as narratives that shape social perceptions of childhood, victimhood, and criminality. In this context, this study aims to make an original contribution to the relevant literature by examining through which discursive frameworks the phenomena of childhood, crime, and violence are represented in news about the Mattia Ahmet Minguzzi murder, which took place in 2025. For this purpose, news published in Cumhuriyet, Milliyet, and Sabah newspapers was analyzed within the framework of Teun A. van Dijk’s critical discourse analysis approach. In the study, news headlines, news leads, background and contextual information, syntactic structure, word choices, and news rhetoric were evaluated comparatively. The findings show that the same murder case was constructed by the newspapers along different discursive axes. While Cumhuriyet addressed the event mostly in the context of legal processes and institutional responsibility, Milliyet foregrounded family trauma, public mourning, and moral reaction. In Sabah, security, public authority, and state intervention constitute a prominent discursive framework. On the other hand, based on the Mattia Ahmet Minguzzi case, the study shows that the analyzed news texts function as texts that reconstruct the relationship between childhood, crime, and justice in different ways within media discourse.
