Abstract
This article examines the validity and reliability of logical syllogisms in yielding sound conclusions when applied to religious texts pertaining to theological (kalām) questions. The relationship between logic and kalām has a long history of debate and tension in Islamic thought. One current, represented by Ibn Taymiyya and al-Suyūṭī among others, rejected the use of Aristotelian logic in understanding the Qur’ān and the Sunna, arguing that it conflicts with the conventions of the Arabic language and leads to corrupt conclusions. Later theologians, by contrast, following the path opened by al-Ghazālī, adopted logic extensively in their argumentation and considered its application to scriptural texts legitimate. Nevertheless, they sought coherence and precision in their inferences and avoided contradiction in their theological system. For this reason, they paid particular attention to whether the conclusions derived from logical rules conformed to Qur’ānic verses and Prophetic traditions, a concern that produced a distinct body of literature in major works and independent treatises. The article first sets out the fundamentals of the syllogism, emphasizing that the syllogism is a formal structure concerned with the correctness of form rather than the truth of premises. On this basis, the theologians argued that false conclusions stem either from false premises, for which logic cannot be held responsible, or from the failure to observe the conditions of a valid syllogism. The article then presents examples from exegetical literature, notably al-Bayḍāwī’s and al-Khafājī’s discussions in order to demonstrate the prevalence of this literature, particularly in the Ottoman period. The core of the study is an analysis of two concise treatises. The first is by the Ottoman theologian Abū Saʿīd al-Khādimī (d. 1176/1763), concerning the hadith “What Allah wills happens, and what He does not will does not happen” and the verse “You will nothing except that Allah wills” (al-Insān 76:30). Al-Khādimī transmits a problem cited by al-Khafājī (d. 1069/1659) in Nasīm al-riyāḍ: when the verse is taken as the minor premise and the hadith as the major premise in a first-figure syllogism, the conclusion is that whatever people will must come to be, which is clearly false. Al-Khādimī rejects al-Khafājī’s answer and proposes two solutions: either the middle term is not repeated, since the verse refers to the existent and the hadith to the non-existent, or human will is understood as capacity concomitant with the act (al-istiṭāʿa maʿa al-fiʿl). The second treatise, by his younger brother Abū Naʿīm al-Khādimī (d. 1160/1747), serves as a commentary and correction. Drawing on the Ḥanafī theory of exception, the negative quality of the minor premise and the Ashʿarī notion of acquisition (kasb), he denies that any valid syllogism arises from the two texts and argues that the problem does not exist in the first place. The article concludes that this literature reflects the methodological rigor of later theologians, and it includes a critical edition of both treatises based on their manuscripts and Ottoman printed copies.
