Abstract

The 21st century has witnessed a rapid evolution in sports technologies and the digital transformation of the Olympic Games. The Olympics, as international events hosted by different nations and cities, have become arenas where technological advancements not only enhance athletic performance, spectator engagement, and managerial efficiency, but also integrate innovations across diverse domains such as wearable devices, goal-line technologies, and advanced analytical systems. This study examines the technologies employed in the Summer Olympic Games from Sydney 2000 to Paris 2024, aiming to reveal the digitalisation process of the Olympic Movement. Conducted as a literature-based review, the research first analyses the technologies utilised in each Olympic edition. Information was gathered through a comprehensive review of news articles, official organisational websites, technology providers’ platforms, event reports, and related audiovisual materials. The technologies observed in the Olympics were categorised into several dimensions, including performance technologies, officiating and decision-support systems, fan experience and engagement technologies, organisational and infrastructural technologies, and analytical innovations. In conclusion, the technological advancements observed throughout the Olympics have redefined the interaction between humans, the environment, and technology—extending beyond athletic performance. The technological transformation within the Olympic Games demonstrates that sport has evolved from a mere arena of competition into a laboratory of innovation, data management, and sustainability.
