Abstract

Child abuse in sports is a significant child protection problem that is largely shaped by asymmetrical power relations between coaches and athletes and often progresses through systematic manipulation processes. In the literature, this process is referred to as “grooming” and involves the perpetrator establishing a relationship of trust with the child, gradually weakening the child’s psychological resistance, normalizing boundary violations, and constructing a culture of silence around the victim. This study aims to reinterpret the concept of “grooming” through the metaphor of “emotional grooming” (“duygusal tımar”) in Turkish. The etymological and cultural background of the concept of “tımar” presents important psychological similarities with grooming in terms of establishing trust, observing vulnerabilities, developing controlled intimacy, and normalizing physical contact. In this study, authority relations in sports settings, cultures of silence, risks of digital grooming, and child protection regulations within international legal systems were examined through a literature-based approach. In addition, the legal and institutional dimensions of the grooming process in Türkiye were evaluated, and conceptual as well as practice-oriented recommendations for child protection policies were developed. In this context, the study argues that the conceptualization of “emotional grooming” may contribute to making the psychological dimension of the grooming process more visible within Turkish literature and may provide a new awareness-based perspective for the field of child protection.
