Abstract

This study aimed to address these gaps by evaluating the acute effects of 400 mg of caffeine on anaerobic performance, agility, balance, and strength in trained tennis players. This randomized parallel-group controlled trial, compliant with CONSORT guidelines, involved 29 trained undergraduate tennis players (aged 18–23 years). Participants were randomized to an experimental group (n=14, 400 mg oral caffeine 30–60 min pre-post-testing) or a control group (n=15, no supplementation). Pre- and post-tests, 48 hours apart, assessed balance (Flamingo test), explosive power (standing long jump), agility (pro-agility test), sprint speed (30 m sprint), grip strength (Takei dynamometer), and leg/back strength (Takei dynamometer). Mixed-model ANOVA analysed group × time interactions, followed by paired and independent t-tests, with significance at p 0.05). The control group exhibited no changes (all p > 0.05). Between-group post-test comparisons were non-significant (p > 0.05), with a moderate effect for agility (d = 0.48). Acute 400 mg caffeine supplementation selectively enhances agility and back strength in tennis players, likely via heightened neuromuscular activation and force production. These task-specific benefits suggest potential for targeted use in tennis, warranting further research on dosing, individual variability, and chronic effects in elite athletes.
