Abstract

Social media can increase body dissatisfaction among university students, negatively affect body perception, trigger eating disorders, and carry risks such as addiction. This study aimed to examine differences in body composition, social media addiction, and body perception among students from the Faculties of Sports Sciences, Educational Sciences, and Health Sciences at Burdur Mehmet Akif Ersoy University, and to investigate the relationship between social media addiction and body perception. A total of 297 students participated voluntarily (103 Sports Sciences, 100 Health Sciences, 94 Educational Sciences). Data were collected using a personal information form, InBody device, the “Body Perception Scale,” and the “Bergen Social Media Addiction Scale.” Independent Sample T-Test, One Way ANOVA, and Pearson Correlation analyses were applied. Results showed no significant gender difference in social media addiction scores (p>0.05), while female students’ body perception scores (X̄=93.36) were significantly higher than males’ (X̄=78.82) (p 0.05). In females, social media addiction and body perception were unrelated, whereas in males a significant relationship was identified (p<0.05). Body composition analysis indicated that Sports Sciences students had higher weight, body mass index, muscle mass, and water weight compared to other faculties, while Educational Sciences students had higher fat percentage values (p<0.05). In conclusion, female students demonstrated higher body perception scores than males, but no gender differences in social media addiction were observed. It is recommended that universities implement awareness programs and continuous guidance to promote healthy body composition and reduce the negative effects of social media addiction and body perception.
