Abstract
The aim of this study was to investigate the acute effects of pre-exercise whey protein supplementation on performance in female tennis players. A total of 12 active and trained female tennis players aged 18–25 years voluntarily participated in the study. The study was conducted using a single-blind, counterbalanced crossover experimental design with three testing sessions separated by 48-hour intervals. Participants received whey protein (30 g + 300 mL water), placebo (non-caloric sweetener + 300 mL water), and water only (control condition). Thirty minutes after supplementation, participants completed a series of performance tests, including vertical jump, visual reaction time, T-agility test, 10-m and 20-m sprint, handgrip strength, and ball speed assessments. The Borg Rating of Perceived Exertion (RPE) Scale was used to assess perceived exertion, the Visual Analog Scale (VAS) was used to evaluate delayed onset muscle soreness, and the Gastrointestinal Symptom Rating Scale (GSRS) was used to assess gastrointestinal symptoms. The results indicated no statistically significant differences in anaerobic power, ball speed, handgrip strength, vertical jump performance, RPE, or GSRS scores (p>0.05). However, significant differences were observed in 10-m and 20-m sprint performance, T-agility performance, VAS scores, and the fastest and final visual reaction time measures (p<0.05). In conclusion, pre-exercise whey protein consumption may support sprint and visual reaction performance. Nevertheless, the superior sprint and agility performances observed in both the whey protein and placebo groups compared with the control condition suggest that placebo effects may also contribute to performance improvements. Therefore, although whey protein may exert beneficial effects on certain performance parameters, further research is needed to determine whether these effects are independent of placebo responses.
