Abstract

The purpose of this study is to examine the effects of eccentric strength training with resistance bands on anaerobic power in handball players. Among the male handball players participating in the study, the experimental group (n=14; eccentric strength training with resistance bands + handball technique and tactics) had a mean age of 20.07 ± 1.6 years, a mean height of 191.14 ± 5.2 cm, and body weight was 92.9 ± 9.1 kg, while the control group (n=14; handball technique and tactics) had a mean age of 20.29 ± 1.4 years, a mean height of 190.21 ± 8.6 cm, and a mean body weight of 89.5 ± 7.2 kg. During the eight-week training period, the experimental group participated in eccentric strength training with resistance bands three days a week (Monday, Wednesday, Friday). Both the experimental and control groups underwent handball technical and tactical training (Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday). As part of the study, participants’ Fitjump vertical jump and squat (MYO test) anaerobic power values were recorded. Data were analyzed using the SPSS 25.0 software package. A mixed-measures analysis of variance (ANOVA) was applied to compare the pre-test and post-test measurements of the study’s dependent variables between the experimental and control groups. A significance level of p < 0.05 was adopted. According to the results of the data analysis, significant differences were observed in the pre-test and post-test scores for vertical jump (cm, mm) and anaerobic power (watts) based on the Group × Time interaction. A statistically significant difference was found in favor of the experimental group. Based on the findings of this study, it can be concluded that an eight-week resistance band-based eccentric strength training program positively affects anaerobic power levels in male handball players.
