Abstract

This research note examines the biograph of al-Ḥanafī, his study on Arabic Rhetoric called al-Maqāmāt; the function of poetic passages in this book and analyzes the role of prosodic meter (ʿarūḍ) in the production of meaning. The study first provides a brief introduction to the author’s life as well as the manuscript and printed versions of the work. It then addresses the reasons for the inclusion of poetry in the maqāmas, the question of the authorship of the poems, and the use of quotation within the text. In this context, it is argued that al-Ḥanafī employs poetry not merely as an aesthetic device, but as a component that reinforces the rhetorical structure of the narrative and directs meaning. The analysis reveals that the majority of the poetic passages belong to the author himself, although some are drawn from classical poets. Furthermore, al-Ḥanafī’s preference for classical prosodic meters such as ṭawīl, wāfir, basīṭ, and rajaz demonstrates his adherence to the traditional aesthetics of Arabic poetry. Particular attention is given to the role of meter in determining the interpretation of polysemous words, which is illustrated through a selected example. In this respect, ʿarūḍ is shown to function not only as a rhythmic system but also as a structural element that directly contributes to the formation of meaning. The study ultimately aims to provide a basis for further research on the relationship between poetry, meter, and meaning within the maqāma genre.
