Abstract

This study aims to examine the maqāma/maqāmāt tradition, one of the distinguished genres of classical Arabic narrative, within the framework of Aristotle’s Rhetorical Triangle (ethos–pathos–logos). As a narrative genre, the maqāma may be defined as a fictional form of storytelling narrated by an imaginary narrator, in which the events experienced by a prota-gonist (often portrayed as a trickster figure such as a thief, pickpocket, or brigand, yet simul-taneously resourceful, eloquent, and cunning) are presented in a carefully constructed, ficti-onalized manner. The narrative typically revolves around the hero’s journeys to various ci-ties and the adventures he encounters in different locales, combining elements that are partly pastoral and distinctly picaresque, and at times bearing a fantastical character. This genre is particularly designed to display, and in many respects to teach, the full range of the Arabic language’s subtleties and rhetorical devices with exceptional mastery. For this rea-son, the maqāma is primarily regarded as a literary genre rather than a purely narrative or historical form. Adopting a qualitative research design, the study combines close reading with comparative rhetorical analysis. The primary corpus is al-Ḥanefī’s Maqāmātu’l-Ḥanefī, analyzed through a descriptive–analytical approach on the basis of its manuscript and prin-ted witnesses. The text is examined both holistically and at the level of selected maqāmāt in light of the theoretical triad of ethos, pathos, and logos. Throughout the analysis, classical Arabic rhetorical literatüre is taken as a key reference point; rhetorical features are identified through contextual examples and interpreted against their historical and literary backgro-unds. In this way, the study seeks to integrate historical-philological grounding with a theo-retical rhetorical reading. At the center of the research stands the Maqāmātu’l-Ḥanefī of Ṣāʿid b. Aḥmad al-Ḥanefī who lived during the Zengid period (6th/12th century). The study first investigates the author’s identity, works, and historical context; then introduces the ma-nuscript and printed copies of the Maqāmāt, discusses the work’s formal and structural fea-tures, and examines its content. Subsequently, the Maqāmāt is evaluated in terms of the core narrative components of the genre (narrator, protagonist, and plot). In the next stage, selec-ted passages are analyzed specifically through the lens of Aristotle’s Rhetorical Triangle: et-hos (the construction of the narrator’s authority and credibility), pathos (emotional impact achieved through satire, humor, dramatic scenes, and aesthetic description), and logos (rea-soning through analogy, exemplary argumentation, poetic inference, and systematic argu-ment). Finally, a set of representative maqāmāt (first and twenty-second maqāma) based analysis. This demonstrates that the rhetorical triangle operates not only at the macro-structural level of the work but also functionally within individual texts. By approaching al-Ḥanefī’s Maqāmāt as a “rhetorical laboratory” that brings together the legacy of classical Arabic prose rhetoric and Aristotle’s philosophical theory of persuasion, this study proposes a new model of reading and analysis for maqāma scholarship. Moreover, a survey of the exis-ting literature reveals no prior study that subjects maqāma works to a systematic and comp-rehensive analysis from the perspective of Aristotle’s rhetorical triangle (ethos–pathos–logos). In this respect, the present study aims to fill a significant gap by evaluating the maqāma tradition not only through Arabic rhetorical and stylistic categories but also on the basis of philosophical rhetorical theory. Moreover, insofar as can be determined, the study contributes to the existing literature by introducing and bringing to light a work that -apart from the preparation of an edited edition- has not previously been the subject of any acade-mic research, and by doing so on the basis of its manuscript witnesses.
