Abstract
Theatre occupies a significant place in Turkish literature as a literary genre that has played a prominent role in fostering social consciousness throughout the processes of renewal, transformation, and modernization. Particularly in societies with limited reading habits, theatre has been regarded as an effective means of enlightening the public due to its ability to reach broad audiences and support intellectual and social change. Plays dealing with historical events also perform an important function in preserving, transmitting, and enriching collective memory, while simultaneously enabling the reinterpretation of the past. This study aims to introduce and evaluate Cumhuriyet Döneminde Tarihî Tiyatro (Historical Theatre in the Republican Period, 2025), written by Abdullah Şengül. First, the scope, methodology, and general framework of the book are examined, followed by an analysis of the criteria employed in the evaluation of historical plays discussed in the work. In addition, the study seeks to identify the gaps filled by this publication within the existing literature on historical theatre in the Republican period, the opportunities it offers to researchers, and its contributions to the field. Furthermore, attention is paid to the book’s role in facilitating a comprehensive approach to the study of historical theatre. In this respect, the present study aims to contribute both to the development of historical theatre studies and to scholarly research on Turkish theatre.

Türk edebiyatında tiyatro, yenileşme, değişme ve modernleşme süreçleri içerisinde toplumsal bilinç oluşturma işleviyle öne çıkan önemli edebî türlerden biridir. Özellikle okuma oranının sınırlı olduğu toplumlarda tiyatro, geniş kitlelere ulaşabilmesi ve düşünsel dönüşümü desteklemesi bakımından halkı aydınlatmanın etkili araçlarından biri olarak kabul edilmektedir. Tarihî olayları konu edinen tiyatro metinleri ise geçmişin yeniden yorumlanmasına imkân tanımasının yanı sıra toplumsal hafızanın korunması, aktarılması ve geliştirilmesi açısından da önemli bir işleve sahiptir. Bu çalışma, Abdullah Şengül tarafından kaleme alınan Cumhuriyet Döneminde Tarihî Tiyatro (2025) adlı eseri tanıtmayı ve değerlendirmeyi amaçlamaktadır. Çalışmada öncelikle eserin kapsamı, yöntemi ve genel çerçevesi ortaya konulacak, ardından eserde ele alınan tarihî tiyatroların hangi ölçütler doğrultusunda değerlendirildiği incelenecektir. Ayrıca söz konusu çalışmanın Cumhuriyet dönemi tarihî tiyatrolarına ilişkin literatürde doldurduğu boşluklar, araştırmacılara sunduğu imkânlar ve alana sağladığı katkılar tespit edilmeye çalışılacaktır. Bunun yanında eserin, tarihî tiyatro çalışmalarının bütüncül bir bakış açısıyla değerlendirilmesine sağladığı katkı da ele alınacaktır. Bu yönüyle çalışma, hem tarihî tiyatro araştırmalarının gelişimine hem de Türk tiyatrosu üzerine yapılan incelemelere katkı sunmayı hedeflemektedir.
