Abstract

In Turkish literature, the story has consistently served as a significant narrative medium reflecting social, political, and institutional transformations across different periods. The formation of the modern story emerged in the 19th century through encounters with Western literary forms, and from the Tanzimat era onward the genre underwent substantial technical and thematic shifts. Despite this development, studies that directly examine the relationship between the short story and such elements as bureaucracy, state mechanisms, and social structures remain limited. Yet it is evident that, with the process of modernization, civil servant typologies, institutional functioning, and state–society relations increasingly acquired a critical dimension within narrative texts. The present study addresses this gap by offering a comprehensive analysis of how institutional corruption is represented in Turkish short stories written between 1870 and 1950. By examining the texts in terms of both content and context, the research demonstrates how critiques of bureaucratic structures are articulated through literature, thereby providing an original and valuable contribution to the field through its systematic approach.
