Abstract
This study aims to examine the processes of value production and the ideological structure in Kemal Tahir’s novel Esir Şehrin İnsanları (People of the Captive City) through Vincent Jouve’s semiotics of values. The conceptual framework of the research is grounded in Jouve’s term "effect of value" and the analyses of way of looking, language, technical competence, and ethics presented by Philippe Hamon as components of ideology. The fundamental dynamic forming the axiological skeleton of the text is shaped through the deep contrast between the characters Nermin and Nedime. As a result of the analysis, it has been determined that Nermin—who relies on the Ottoman bureaucracy and prioritizes status quo and individual comfort—functions as a passive "counter-model." It is observed that Nermin establishes a disconnected and reactive paratactic structure at the rhetorical level, while following a pathos-heavy persuasion strategy that produces victimhood at the pragmatic level. In contrast, Nedime stands out as a "positive model" with her stance representing the spirit of the National Struggle, social responsibility, and action. It has been identified that Nedime structures her discourse in a hypotactic order based on cause-effect relationships and constructs a combative ethos by maintaining a balance between logos and pathos. The functioning of modalities within the text clearly demonstrates how the same phenomenon acquires entirely new meanings by two opposing ideals—one legitimizing avoidance and the other obligation. The ideological backbone of the novel feeds on this tension between the "safe harbor" of the old order represented by Nermin and the "arduous struggle" of the new horizon pointed out by Nedime. This established axiological structure is the primary determinant that enables the protagonist, Kâmil Bey, to decide within which system he will become a subject and how he will direct his own moral stance.
