Abstract

The increasing impact of climate change on economic and financial systems has prompted central banks, whose mission is to safeguard financial stability, to develop policies that take environmental risks into account. In this context, green central banking has emerged as a new policy area that supports sustainable economic growth and low-carbon transition goals, in addition to price stability. The aim of this study is to examine academic studies in the field of green central banking and green finance using bibliometric analysis methods. In this context, a literature search was conducted in the Web of Science database using the keywords “green central banking” and “green finance.” A total of 625 articles published in English over the last 10 years in the Web of Science database and indexed in the Social Sciences Citation Index, Science Citation Index Expanded, and Emerging Sources Citation Index were included in this analysis. Translated with DeepL.com (free version) To perform the bibliometric analysis and visualize networks and trends, the R software and the Biblioshiny package were used. The findings indicate that academic interest in green finance and central banking has increased rapidly, especially after 2020, with the highest number of studies conducted in China and European countries. Additionally, the keywords “green finance,” “climate risk,” and “sustainable development” emerge as the most frequently used concepts in the literature. The results show that green central banking and green finance are rapidly developing, interdisciplinary research areas.
