Abstract

The aim of this study, which examines the functions of the fundamental concepts of discourse analysis in the processes of text production and reception, is to remind some of the terms that have been used, developed and finalised over time in the field of discourse analysis and to examine the roles they play in text production and reception. These terms have been analysed in the literature, usually using short texts of a few lines produced by the authors themselves. Their functioning in (longer) coherent texts with communicative integrity has been neglected. In this study, these concepts have been analysed in sample texts taken from actual use. It is pointed out that the news structure of the sentences, i.e. the ordering of given… new..., is not accidental and has communicative value, that it is based on the speaker's/writer's assumption of what the other party does and does not know about that subject, i.e., its pragmatic meaning; on the other hand, what is chosen as new i.e. topicalization of individual sentences in a text helps constitute the topic of the whole text. The Speech-Act Theory is analysed in terms of its role in the formation of cohesive and coherent texts with the help of locutionary-illocutionary-perlocutionary meanings. Contextual and conventional implicatures, as well as logical and contextual inferences are analysed in terms of how speakers construct semantic and pragmatic meaning and produce coherent discourses. There is a contextual socio-cultural link between propositional meanings and pragmatic meanings of sentences ensuring coherence of the text.
