Abstract

This study aims to examine the spatial design components of nature-based children's playgrounds and to develop conceptual design proposals based on the findings. The research employed a combination of literature review and comparative case study analysis. Nature-based playgrounds selected from Türkiye and different countries were evaluated according to the criteria of topography use, interaction with vegetation, interaction with water, use of natural materials, use of loose parts, and opportunities for risk and exploration. The results indicated that nature-based playground design principles were implemented more comprehensively in the international examples. While the use of natural materials emerged as a prominent component in both groups, international examples achieved higher scores in interaction with water, use of loose parts, and topographic diversity. Based on the findings, the key design components of nature-based playgrounds were identified, and four conceptual design models were developed through different spatial configurations. The visual representation of these models was generated using AI-supported image generation tools available on the ChatGPT and Gemini platforms. As a result, the study identifies the fundamental spatial design components of nature-based playgrounds and provides a framework for different design scenarios.
