Abstract

From the Lumière brothers’ earliest films, which captured people going about their daily lives, to the present day, the debate has centered on whether the lives of characters in documentary films are recorded with or without intervention, and on the characters’ positioning in front of the camera. In this context, the article examines Pelin Esmer’s documentary Oyun (2005) through the lens of Erving Goffman’s concept of “The Presentation of Self in Everyday Life.” Unlike fictional films, documentaries do not feature professional actors playing fictional characters designed by others, but rather “non-acting real people”—that is, “social actors.” This situation in documentary films does not imply that the events and situations unfolding before the camera are entirely objective. Because when individuals step in front of the camera in a documentary and engage in dialogue with the director, Goffman’s concept of “the presentation of the self” begins to fully materialize, and social actors present themselves by adjusting their behavior according to the camera’s presence. According to Goffman’s theory, when individuals appear before others, they present a specific “front” (front stage) to create the desired impression; they keep actions that contradict this presentation or might cast a shadow on it hidden in the “back” (backstage), which is concealed from the audience. In the documentary play, the process by which women from Arslanköy stage a theatrical work based on their daily lives explores the presentation of the self in daily life, on the theater stage, and in front of the camera.

Özet

Lumiere kardeşlerin gündelik yaşamına devam eden insanları kayıt altına aldığı ilk filmlerinden günümüze değil, belgesel filmlerdeki karakterlerin yaşamlarının müdahale edilerek mi yoksa müdahale edilmeden mi kayıt altına alındığı, karakterlerin kamera karşısındaki konumu tartışma konusu olmuştur. Bu bağlamda makalede, Pelin Esmer’in Oyun (2005) adlı belgeseli, Erving Goffman’ın Günlük Yaşamda Benliğin Sunumu kavramı üzerinden incelemiştir.
