Abstract

Purpose: The aim of the study is to examine postgraduate studies led by physiotherapists in Turkey on treatment approaches to swallowing rehabilitation in dysphagia problems, which can be frequently encountered in neurological diseases. Method: This study was designed as a descriptive study using the document analysis technique, which is one of the qualitative research methods. Among the postgraduate theses on swallowing therapy in neurogenic dysphagia carried out in Turkey and published by the Higher Education Institution Presidency Thesis Center (YÖKTEZ) in October 2023; Using the keywords "swallowing", "dysphagia", "neurogenic dysphagia", "swallowing rehabilitation", "dysphagia rehabilitation", postgraduate theses applying treatment approaches in swallowing therapy performed by physiotherapists were filtered and 8 postgraduate theses were reached. Results: Between 2008 and 2022, 2 master's and 6 doctoral theses were conducted on swallowing rehabilitation for neurogenic dysphagia problems by physiotherapists. It was shown that 6 of the studies were randomized controlled clinical studies, 2 were treatment-comparison studies, and the sample consisted of patients with Parkinson's disease, stroke, cerebral palsy, and multiple sclerosis. It has been found that instrumental evaluation methods, which are objective methods frequently used in the literature, are preferred in evaluation parameters and the results of the applied treatment methods are effective in swallowing rehabilitation. Conclusion: The high frequency of dysphagia in neurological diseases suggests that treatment approaches to swallowing rehabilitation should be increased. Therefore, there is a need to increase studies on the treatment of dysphagia in different disease populations. There is a need to increase interest in studies in which physiotherapists, who play an active role in both the rehabilitation of neurological diseases and swallowing rehabilitation, are active in treatment programs in this field.
