Abstract

Maintaining strong diplomatic ties between countries and closely monitoring developments enables nations to track the progress of their counterparts and to document these developments. In this regard, the Republic of Turkey has successfully monitored developments in many countries through its diplomats. One such country is Jordan. As a key country in the Middle East, Jordan is also one of the nations closely monitored by Turkey due to its significant impact from the occupation of Palestine. This study focuses on the 1950s, a period during which Turkey monitored developments in Jordan. Another challenge faced by the country, which was obliged to host approximately half a million refugees, was the post-independence reconstruction. Drawing primarily on Turkish diplomatic archives, this study makes use of a report prepared by Selman Pınar, Third Secretary at the Turkish Embassy in Amman. Additionally, copyrighted works are included among the study’s sources. The findings of the study indicate that assistance from the United Kingdom, the United States and the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) contributed to the country’s development, and that aid from these three channels was channelled into distinct yet mutually reinforcing sectors.
