Abstract
Travelogues are among the important sources used to understand the political, military, economic, and social structures of past societies. Travelers recorded the cities, ports, roads, fortresses, and daily life of the regions they visited, based on their own observations. These texts are noteworthy not only for providing information about the social and administrative structure of the period, but also for showing how different societies perceived each other. Among these travelogues, observations on military structures, port organization, and naval defenses are of particular importance. Some European travelers who sailed the Mediterranean closely examined the Ottoman Empire’s naval power, straits, and fortified centers, and reflected these observations in detail in their works. John Montagu’s travelogue is one of the sources that should be evaluated within this framework. John Montagu (4th Earl of Sandwich), a prominent 18th-century English statesman, closely observed the Ottoman Empire’s straits, ports, and island fortifications during his Mediterranean voyage in 1738-1739. His posthumously published work, A Voyage Round the Mediterranean, contains remarkable information about the Ottoman navy and naval defenses. This study aims to examine the Ottoman Empire’s naval dominance through its straits, ports, and fortified islands, based on Montagu’s observations. Thus, this study opens up a discussion on the possibilities that Montagu’s observations offer to research on Ottoman military and naval history. His posthumously published work, A Voyage Round the Mediterranean, contains remarkable information about the Ottoman navy and naval defenses. Montagu provides noteworthy insights into the defense system of the Dardanelles, the artillery arrangements of the forts, the functioning of the Imperial Shipyard (Tersane-I Âmire), and the organization of the Ottoman fleet. The work also addresses issues of island fortifications, port protection, and maritime security through observations of centers such as Rhodes, Malta, Izmir, and Alexandria.
Ölümünden sonra yayımlanan A Voyage Round the Mediterranean adlı eseri, Osmanlı bahriyesi ve deniz savunması hakkında önemli bilgiler içermektedir. Bu çalışma, Montagu’nun gözlemlerinden hareketle Osmanlı Devleti’nin boğazlar, limanlar ve tahkim edilmiş adalar aracılığıyla sürdürdüğü deniz hâkimiyetini incelemeyi amaçlamaktadır. Böylelikle çalışma, Montagu’nun gözlemlerinin Osmanlı askerî ve denizcilik tarihi araştırmalarına sunduğu imkânları tartışmaya açmaktadır.
