Abstract

Turkish mythology encompasses a rich system of symbols reflecting society's understanding of the universe, life, and death. Within this system, Umay Ana and Erlik Han stand out as two complementary mythological figures representing the cosmological order of the Turks. While Umay Ana symbolizes life, fertility, and protection, Erlik Han is regarded as the ruler of the underworld, representing posthumous order, transformation, and death. However, previous studies have primarily examined these figures from historical, religious, and folkloric perspectives, whereas the common iconographic codes that constitute their visual identities and the symbolic meanings of these codes have not been comparatively investigated in sufficient depth. Therefore, this study aims to identify the common visual codes of Umay Ana and Erlik Han and to interpret their symbolic meanings through iconographic and semiotic approaches. This study employed document analysis, one of the qualitative research methods. The data consisted of mythological narratives concerning Umay Ana and Erlik Han, together with relevant scholarly publications. The collected data were coded according to visual characteristics such as figure, body, hair, face, headgear, beard, clothing, animals, plants, objects, vehicles, and spatial elements, and recurring features were classified as common visual codes. The data were analyzed using Panofsky's iconographic analysis and Barthes' semiotic approach. The findings indicate that Umay Ana is represented through the figures of a woman, mother, and child, as well as by golden-blond hair, white clothing, birds, deer, the Tree of Life, and protective objects associated with children, symbolizing life, fertility, abundance, and protection. In contrast, Erlik Han is represented by the figures of an elderly man and father, together with black hair, a long beard, horns, dark animals, an iron sword, a snake whip, and symbols associated with the underworld, signifying power, authority, posthumous order, and transformation. The comparative analysis demonstrates that these two figures should not be interpreted as representations of the duality of good and evil, as commonly portrayed in popular culture. Instead, they embody two complementary principles that sustain the cosmological cycle of life and death in Turkish mythology. By systematically identifying the common iconographic codes of these mythological figures, this study contributes to the literature and provides a theoretical framework for the visual representation and character design of Turkish mythological figures.
