Abstract
Cosplay is an interdisciplinary artistic practice based on bringing fictional characters into the physical world through costumes, makeup, and performative elements, and it has gained increasing prominence on a global scale. Moving beyond its conventional image as a fan activity, the phenomenon now constitutes a theoretical intersection with established disciplines such as performance art, wearable art, and body art. The term “cosplay,” formed by combining the English words “costume” and “play,” refers to a practice that has become widespread worldwide. Its contemporary relevance and particularly its appeal to large numbers of young people have further increased its visibility and prevalence. As an expression that has gained global visibility in the twenty-first century and emerged at the intersection of different artistic disciplines, cosplay is considered within the framework of an “artistic practice.” In this context, cosplay is a cultural and artistic activity based on the representational re-enactment of characters from various narrative universes, including science fiction, fantasy literature, comics, cinema, television, and video games. Within both literary and visual contexts, characters can be brought to life through clothing, gestures, and makeup. In this respect, cosplay can be regarded as an artistic act through which individuals externalize the performative bond they establish with fictional characters. Individuals establish a direct connection with characters through clothing and other visual elements and represent these characters through their bodies. Brought into the physical world, these representations acquire spatial and visual reality through the combination of costume construction, makeup, and performative gestures. This study aims to provide a conceptual framework for cosplay by examining the practice through the methodologies and aesthetic principles of the aforementioned artistic fields. The position of cosplay within contemporary art is analyzed through such dynamics as the transformation of the body into a narrative surface, the construction of costume as an artistic object, and the temporal nature of performance. Employing qualitative research methods and visual research techniques, the study evaluates the position of this multilayered form of production, shaped by digital culture and new media environments, within discussions of modern art.
