Abstract
This The aim of this study is to explore the perceptions of nurses working in surgical units and operating rooms regarding patient privacy through the use of metaphors. This study was conducted using the phenomenological design, one of the qualitative research methods. The study sample consisted of 331 nurses working in surgical units across Turkey who voluntarily agreed to participate in the research. Data were collected online using the “Demographic Information Form” and the “Semi-Structured Interview Form.” Participants were asked to complete the statement: “Patient privacy is like … because …” The data were analyzed using content analysis. The inter-rater reliability was found to be 91%. A total of 299 distinct metaphors were generated by the participants. These metaphors were grouped under six themes: Protection and Security (n=69), Fragility and Sensitivity (n=57), Privacy and Boundaries (n=51), Value and Dignity (n=45), Fundamental Rights and Ethical Values (n=40), and an Element of Quality Care (n=37). Nurses defined patient privacy as an area that must be protected, a delicate and fragile structure, a private space with personal boundaries, and a value associated with the individual’s dignity. They also emphasized that privacy is a fundamental human right and an integral part of professional care. Surgical nurses perceive patient privacy not merely as physical privacy, but as a multifaceted concept with ethical, humanitarian, and professional dimensions. The protection of privacy is regarded as one of the fundamental components of high-quality and safe care. In light of these findings, it is recommended that awareness of privacy issues be enhanced in nursing education and clinical practice.
