Abstract

This study examines how pre-school teachers’ perceptions of gender are reflected in their classroom practices, in line with the objectives of anti-bias education regarding identity, diversity, justice and action. Employing phenomenology—one of the qualitative research designs—the study involved semi-structured interviews with 23 teachers working during the 2024–2025 academic year, and the data were analysed using descriptive analysis. The data were analysed descriptively within the framework of themes developed based on the four objectives of anti-bias education. According to the findings, in terms of identity, female teachers reflected their maternal identity in their professional roles. The research findings reveal that teachers perceive early years teaching predominantly as a female profession and that female teachers reflect their maternal identity in their professional roles. Furthermore, it was determined that teachers adopted various teaching strategies aimed at reducing gender-based stereotypes, took care to use inclusive language, and supported equal participation in classroom practices. Consequently, the four objectives of anti-bias training provide a functional framework for supporting gender equality in pre-school classrooms.
