Abstract
This study was conducted to determine the level of contamination of children’s playground areas in parks located in Kütahya province with helminth eggs originating from cats and dogs, and to evaluate the potential public health risks associated with this contamination. To facilitate this research, a total of 100 sand and soil specimens were gathered from the city center of Kütahya. These were obtained by collecting samples from 10 distinct locations within each of the 10 selected children’s playgrounds. The collected samples were examined in the laboratory for the presence of helminth eggs using the zinc sulfate (ZnSO₄) flotation method, without any seasonal restriction. The analyses revealed that helminth eggs were detected in 60 out of the 100 soil samples (60%). Among the positive samples, Toxocara spp. eggs were identified in 38 samples (38%), Ancylostoma spp. in 15 samples (15%), and Taenia spp. in 7 samples (7%). These findings indicate that a substantial proportion of parks in Kütahya are contaminated with zoonotic helminths, representing a serious potential threat to public health. The concentration of helminth eggs particularly in the surface soil of playground areas is noteworthy, as it highlights an increased risk of infection for children. Overall, these results emphasize the need for regular parasitological monitoring of parks, as well as the strengthening of sanitation measures and animal control programs.
