Abstract

In this study, a rigid-body motion represented by quaternions is applied to a tubular surface in . Starting from a given tubular surface, the corresponding kinematic surface is obtained by using a quaternionic rotation and a prescribed constant displacement. It is shown that, in general, the resulting kinematic surface is not a tubular surface. By considering special choices of the rotation axis, the rotation angle, and the translation vector of the motion, several special cases of the kinematic surface are obtained. For these cases, necessary and sufficient conditions are derived for the resulting kinematic surface to be a tubular surface. In the most general special case in which the kinematic surface is again a tubular surface, the coefficients of the first and second fundamental forms, the Gaussian curvature, the mean curvature, the principal curvatures, and the shape operator are computed. Moreover, criteria are given for the parameter curves of this kinematic tubular surface to be lines of curvature, asymptotic curves, and geodesics. Finally, for a unit speed curve in , the associated tubular surface is first constructed, and then its kinematic surface at a constant distance from the edge of regression is obtained. The relevant computations are carried out, and the corresponding figures are presented.
