Abstract

Objective: Maternal mental health can significantly influence breastfeeding behaviors and outcomes. In this context, this study aimed to evaluate the effect of depression levels on breastfeeding self-efficacy among breastfeeding mothers and to examine whether this relationship differs according to sociodemographic variables. Method: This descriptive, cross-sectional, and correlational study was conducted between June and August 2023 with 252 breastfeeding mothers who agreed to participate and were selected using a non-probability sampling method. Data were collected using the Introductory Information Form, the DSM-5 Depression Scale, and the Breastfeeding Self-Efficacy Scale. Data analysis was performed using the SPSS 26.0 statistical software package. Study data were evaluated with descriptive statistics, independent t-test, one-way ANOVA and Bonferroni correction, and relationships between variables were calculated with pearson correlation analysis and multiple regression analysis. Results: The mean score of the mothers' Breastfeeding Self-Efficacy Scale was 54.94±8.00, while the mean score of the DSM-5 Depression Scale was 9.13±5.71. A statistically significant, negative, and weak correlation was found between mothers’ depression levels and breastfeeding self-efficacy (r=−0.253; p<0.05). According to the regression analysis, breastfeeding self-efficacy was significantly explained by depression level, planned pregnancy, and employment status (R² = 0.094, p<0.05). Conclusion: This study showed that there is a statistically significant and negative relationship between breastfeeding mothers' depression levels and breastfeeding self-efficacy. In addition, breastfeeding self-efficacy can be explained by factors such as planned pregnancy and employment status as well as depression levels.
