Abstract
Sabriye Tete, known as Sabotete, is one of the individuals who preserved the oral culture of the Siirt Arabs through songs, folk songs, eulogies (qasidas), and stories. Having lost her sight at the age of six due to smallpox, Sabotete spent the rest of her life facing severe hardships. Despite her harsh living conditions, she continued her struggle and, over time, won a special place in the hearts of the people of Siirt. She entertained and moved the local community at various ceremonies, such as circumcisions, marriage proposals, engagements, henna nights, weddings, and military send-offs, with her songs, folk songs, eulogies, and stories performed in Siirt Arabic. Through this attribute, her narratives assumed a strategic function in preserving the linguistic characteristics of the local dialect and transmitting them to future generations. Due to their significance and contribution, the works Sabotete performed at these ceremonies have been compiled through the testimonies of her acquaintances and fellow citizens. This study is structured under the titles of the life of Sabotete, who is remembered for her resilience against challenging life conditions, the narratives about her, and the songs she performed. The Siirt Arabic text, transcription, and Turkish meaning of the transmitted narratives are presented in a tabular format to facilitate a better reading and understanding of the relevant works. Prepared based on qualitative research and interview methods, this study is expected to introduce Sabotete, known as the guardian of the oral culture of Siirt Arabs, and bring her narratives to light. Furthermore, it aims to contribute to preserving the sub-dialect and dialect features that form a part of the local culture, while offering a fresh perspective to the fields of literature and linguistics.
