Abstract

The image of the social bandit in folk culture is in fact not only the adventure of a rebel, but also an image of heroism shaped by the needs of the environments in which they live. This type of heroes, who emerged as a reaction to injustices in periods when public authority was shaken and the influence of local power holders increased, were separated from robbers and rebels because they did not harm the society they lived in and were the subject of folk narratives in every period. Epics, which are examples of oral literature transformed into written literature, showing the efforts of societies in the process of becoming a nation, their goals for the future, ensuring the formation of culture, describing the pain, joy, feelings and thoughts of the society to which it belongs, are cultural carriers and rich literary works reflecting the traces of the past. narratives shaped in line with the needs of the geography in which they are produced, reflect the social situation of the period in which they emerged, the expectations of the people, as well as contributing to the continuity of culture by transferring the cultural and historical accumulation of the past to future generations. In our study, the nine items that Eric Hobsbawm systematised the concept of “social bandit” in his work “Bandits” and brought it to the literature have been applied to the narratives of Köroğlu and Robin Hood, who are heroes to the public and bandits to the authorities. It is shown how the heroes, who are victims of the injustices done to them and therefore pushed to crime, rise from common criminals to the level of being folk heroes with their lives and reactions to events.
