Abstract
This study examines the possibilities of reusing traditional Turkish motifs in contemporary textile designs within the framework of cultural sustainability. In terms of preserving cultural heritage and transmitting it to future generations, integrating traditional motifs into contemporary products constitutes an important field of research. Within the scope of the study, the motifs of fertility (bereket), scorpion (akrep), ram’s horn (koç boynuzu), hair tie (saç bağı), hand finger comb (el parmak tarak), and hook (çengel) were selected and applied to canvas bags using the punch needle technique. The punch needle technique was preferred in this study because it can be applied in a relatively short time and enables the achievement of qualified results by creating a three-dimensional (3D) surface effect, thereby producing an elegant and warm atmosphere on the products. By focusing on functional items such as bags, the study aims to draw attention to the preservation of traditional Turkish motifs with a deep-rooted history and to examine them in relation to a sustainability-oriented approach. The application examples obtained in the study indicate that the punch needle technique offers an innovative approach to the reinterpretation of traditional motifs and makes significant contributions to textile design within the framework of cultural sustainability.
