Abstract

The spinal cord (medulla spinalis) is a complex neural network and represents the second largest component of the central nervous system in vertebrates, following the brain. It is anatomically located within the vertebral column, enclosed in a space known as the medullary canal (spinal canal). Trauma, congenital anomalies, or acquired conditions can lead to various pathologies, deformities, or abnormalities affecting the spinal cord or its surrounding canal. Among the diagnostic imaging methods used to detect such lesions, myelography holds a significant place in veterinary medicine due to its indications, technical procedures, advantages, and limitations. Myelography is an interventional diagnostic technique that involves the administration of a non-ionic contrast medium into the subarachnoid space via the spinal canal, followed by radiographic imaging. The resulting images (myelograms) allow for the identification of lesion location, size, and potential damage. This method is particularly useful in evaluating morphological changes caused by vertebral fractures, acquired intervertebral disc herniation, intramedullary or extradural spinal tumors, spinal canal stenosis, and meningeal pathologies. The aim of this review is to compile and present the clinical indications, technical considerations, and comparative advantages and disadvantages of myelography in veterinary medicine. Although magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) has gained popularity as a more advanced and non-invasive diagnostic modality, myelography remains an indispensable tool in certain specific clinical scenarios. Moreover, the combined use of myelography with other imaging techniques enhances diagnostic accuracy and supports clinical decision-making.
