Abstract

This article argues that reproduction is far from being an individual decision due to social norms, pressures, and moral considerations surrounding it. Rather, it is a complex process shaped by external factors accompanied by ambivalence, parental, and particularly maternal regret. When certain feelings and actions become taboos, they are also rarely represented in fiction as well as empirical studies. When they are represented, their depiction is mediated by social and individual biases and fears. The article draws on the terminology and theoretical frameworks of such thinkers as Orna Donath, Matti Häyry, and Seana Shiffrin and maintains that the experiences related to ambivalence and regret are much more widespread than is widely assumed, and when they are systematically rendered invisible, it becomes very challenging for them to be represented in an objective and transparent fashion. Initially, the article examines fictional representations including Lionel Shriver’s We Need to Talk About Kevin, Sheila Heti’s Motherhood, and Ernest Hemingway’s “Hills Like White Elephants” in light of the results of social psychology studies about procreative choice, ambivalence, and regret. In addition, the article discusses reproduction within a philosophical framework and addresses the repercussions of certain reproductive decisions by looking at which perspectives of reproductive ethics are present in fictional representations. The purpose of the study is to show that when ambivalence and regret become legitimate experiences related to procreative decision-making processes and parenthood, reproductive decisions can be made in a more realistic and objective manner, and if reproductive ethics becomes a part of this decision-making process, it may lead to more transparent representations of these experiences in fiction.
