Abstract
This study examines Ronald L. Numbers’s edited volume Galileo Goes to Jail: And Other Myths about Science and Religion. The book aims to show how the conflict thesis has been historically constructed by analyzing widespread modern narratives about the relationship between science and religion under the category of “myths.” This review examines the myths discussed in the volume within three main frameworks: the construction of historical narratives, symbolized scientific figures, and the methodological boundaries of modern science. It is argued that narratives surrounding medieval science, the Copernican revolution, and figures such as Galileo, Newton, and Darwin often assume symbolic functions that support the legitimacy of modern thought rather than simply reflecting historical reality. However, while the book corrects the excesses of the conflict narrative, it does not sufficiently problematize the epistemic centrality acquired by modern science. In this respect, the review proposes interpreting the science–religion tension not as a substantive conflict of truths, but as a historical shift in epistemic authority.
Özet
Bu çalışma, Ronald L. Numbers editörlüğünde yayımlanan Galileo Hapiste: Bilim ve Din Üzerine Mitler adlı eseri değerlendirmektedir. Kitap, bilim–din ilişkisine dair modern dönemde dolaşımda olan yaygın anlatıları “mit” kavramı çerçevesinde inceleyerek, çatışma tezinin tarihsel olarak nasıl inşa edildiğini göstermeyi amaçlamaktadır. Değerlendirmede, eserde ele alınan mitler üç ana çerçevede incelenmektedir: Tarihsel anlatıların inşası, sembolleştirilen bilimsel figürler ve modern bilimin metodolojik sınırları. Eserde; Orta Çağ bilimi, Kopernikçi devrim, Galileo, Newton ve Darwin gibi figürler etrafında şekillenen anlatıların çoğu zaman tarihsel gerçeklikten ziyade modern düşüncenin meşruiyetini destekleyen sembolik işlevler üstlendiği iddia edilmektedir. Bununla birlikte eserin, çatışma anlatısının aşırılıklarını düzeltirken modern bilimin kazandığı epistemik merkeziliği problemleştirmediği görülmektedir. Bu çerçevede, yapılan değerlendirme, bilim–din gerilimini içeriksel bir hakikat çatışmasından ziyade epistemik otoritenin tarihsel olarak yer değiştirmesi şeklinde yorumlamayı önermektedir.
