Abstract
Rare earth elements (REEs) have become indispensable raw materials for strategic sectors such as high technology, green energy applications, energy storage systems, the defense industry, electronics industry, automotive manufacturing, and aerospace owing to their unique physical and chemical properties. Their widespread applications have led to a rapid increase in global demand for these elements. However, the concentration of economically exploitable reserves, production activities, and particularly separation and processing capacities in a limited number of countries has transformed REEs into not only economically valuable resources but also strategically and geopolitically critical minerals. This study examines REEs from a geographical perspective by comprehensively evaluating the spatial distribution of reserves, production geography, areas of utilization, global demand trends, geopolitical implications, and environmental consequences. The findings indicate that the ongoing energy transition and digital transformation will continue to drive the demand for REEs in the coming years. At the same time, the concentration of reserves, production, and processing technologies in a few countries creates vulnerabilities within the global supply chain. Furthermore, the environmental impacts associated with mining activities, together with the low recycling rates of rare earth elements (REEs), have emerged as significant challenges to sustainable resource management. In this context, supply chain diversification, the advancement of recycling technologies, the strengthening of environmental sustainability, and the expansion of value-added production capacity are considered essential components of global strategies for REEs. The study concludes that REEs are strategic natural resources that play, and will continue to play, a decisive role in mineral supply security, technological competitiveness, economic development, and geopolitical dynamics throughout the 21st century.
