Abstract

This study aimed to determine the earthquake stress coping strategies and post-earthquake trauma levels of pre-service teachers affected by the February 6, 2023 Kahramanmaraş-centered earthquakes and to examine the relationships between these variables. The study was conducted using a correlational research design. The study group consisted of 298 pre-service teachers enrolled in the faculties of education at İnönü, Adıyaman, Kahramanmaraş Sütçü İmam, Dicle, and Fırat Universities, all of which are located in provinces affected by the earthquakes. Data were collected through a personal information form, the Earthquake Stress Coping Strategies Scale, and the Post-Earthquake Trauma Level Determination Scale. Descriptive statistics, independent samples t-tests, and correlation analysis were used for data analysis. The findings showed that pre-service teachers most frequently used positive reappraisal and religious coping strategies, whereas seeking social support was used at a relatively lower level. Behavioral problems, emotional restriction, and sleep problems were found to be low among the post-earthquake trauma dimensions. Female participants reported higher social support seeking and scored significantly higher on behavioral problems, affective responses, and cognitive restructuring than males. In addition, positive reappraisal was negatively and significantly associated with all trauma dimensions. Overall, the findings suggest that positive reappraisal may function as an important psychological coping resource in reducing post-earthquake traumatic effects among pre-service teachers.
