Abstract
The modernist transformations following the proclamation of the Turkish Republic marked a profound paradigmatic shift across the plastic arts. One of the most visible manifestations of this process is the monumental sculptures embedded in Ankara’s urban fabric, which played a central role in the visual construction of the nation-state identity. Adopting an ontological approach, this study examines how these monumental forms, initially shaped by sculptors, were reinterpreted by Turkish painters and transformed into pictorial representations that function as cultural documents. Moving beyond formal analysis, the research investigates the representations of emblematic monuments such as the Atatürk Monument in front of the Ethnography Museum, the Ulus Victory Monument, and the Güvenpark Security Monument within painting. Positioned at the intersection of urban space, sculpture, and painting, the study contributes an original perspective to the field through an interdisciplinary methodology. Rendered through diverse stylistic approaches, these compositions function as visual archives that document the evolution of the urban landscape, the transformation of public space, and the historical breaking points witnessed by these monuments. Through painterly strategies, monuments emerge not as static objects but as active agents within the artists’ dialectical engagement with the image of Ankara, forming essential components of cultural memory in Contemporary Turkish Art.
Özet
Cumhuriyet’in ilanıyla birlikte Türk sanat tarihinde yaşanan modernist atılımlar, plastik sanatların her alanında köklü bir paradigma değişimini beraberinde getirmiştir.
