Abstract

The spread of digitalization and artificial intelligence has made data-driven decision-making increasingly visible in the film industry. This transformation restructures not only production, distribution, and marketing practices but also the ways in which creative decisions are made during screenplay development. Decision Support Systems (DSS) generate predictions by analyzing variables such as historical film data, genre patterns, narrative structures, character relations, emotional tone, and audience expectations. This study aims to examine the effects of DSS on creativity in screenwriting from an interdisciplinary perspective. A qualitative case study design was adopted, and literature review, document analysis, and case analysis were used together. Joker (2019) was selected as the case because it departs from conventional superhero narrative patterns, foregrounds psychological depth and character-centered narration, and achieved unexpected commercial success. The findings indicate that DSS can function as supportive tools in the creative process; however, predictions based on previous success patterns may also contribute to narrative standardization and the narrowing of creative diversity. In this context, the study discusses the tension between data-driven production logic and creative originality and points to the necessity of a hybrid production model in which human creativity and algorithmic systems complement each other.
