Abstract
In contemporary production systems, increasing product variety and demand uncertainty lead product life cycles to exhibit shorter and more discontinuous patterns, necessitating their evaluation from a production planning perspective. This study aims to analyse the product life cycle through a multi-stage mathematical modelling framework, based on the premise that each phase embodies distinct structural dynamics rather than conforming to a single continuous curve. The empirical analysis is based on 16 quarters of sales data (2020–2023) for the “ARD” product series of a large-scale ceramics manufacturer operating under a make-to-order production system. Within this framework, a hybrid modelling approach is developed, employing the Gompertz function to capture the introduction and growth phases, and an exponential decay model to represent the decline phase. The proposed model is implemented in a Python environment and evaluated against actual sales data through comparative analysis. The findings reveal that the examined product series deviates from the classical product life cycle structure. Specifically, the absence of a clearly defined maturity phase is observed, with sales transitioning directly from peak levels into a decline pattern. Moreover, the life cycle exhibits an asymmetric trajectory characterized by a rapid growth phase followed by a sharp contraction. The high level of fit between the proposed model and empirical data (R² ≈ 0.96) indicates that the approach provides a meaningful representation of discontinuous and irregular demand patterns. These results suggest that, particularly in make-to-order production environments, demand continuity is limited and life cycle stages may not adhere to traditional assumptions. In this context, the study contributes to the literature by offering a multi-stage modelling framework that enhances the analytical representation of product life cycles and supports production planning decisions within flexible and smart manufacturing systems.
