Abstract

Thoracoscopy is a minimally invasive technique used for imaging the thoracic cavity. Thoracoscopy can be performed in small animals for diagnostic and operative procedures. Special equipment is required to perform thoracoscopy. The most important of this special equipment is rigid telescopes that can be selected in different diameters and angles. Thoracoscopy is most commonly performed to examine the structures of the thoracic cavity and to take biopsies. It is also performed for surgical procedures such as lung lobectomy, pericardiectomy, ductus thoracicus ligation, cranial mediastinal mass resection, and surgical correction of vascular ring anomalies. Thoracoscopy is an advantageous method due to its short operation period, quick recovery, less postoperative pain, low infection risk, and low morbidity. This review aims to provide information about thoracoscopy, a minimally invasive technique that serves as an alternative to thoracotomy in small animal medicine.
