Abstract

Pneumothorax, characterized by the abnormal accumulation of air within the pleural space, remains a critical respiratory disorder that restricts lung expansion, impairs gas exchange, and poses a substantial life-threatening risk if left untreated. In feline and canine patients, this condition typically manifests either spontaneously due to underlying pulmonary pathologies or secondary to blunt and penetrating thoracic trauma. Mechanistically, it is categorized into open, closed, and tension pneumothorax. Clinically, affected animals commonly present with acute-onset dyspnea, tachypnea, mucosal cyanosis, and a distinct reduction in bronchovesicular sounds upon auscultation. Diagnosis is predominantly established through thoracic radiography, ultrasonography, or computed tomography. Although therapeutic protocols vary based on severity and the primary etiology, management typically encompasses oxygen supplementation, thoracocentesis, closed chest drainage systems, or surgical intervention. Prompt diagnosis and tailored management are paramount to mitigating morbidity and mortality rates. This review aims to deliver a comprehensive, evidence-based overview of the clinical, laboratory, and radiological findings in cats and dogs with pneumothorax, while evaluating current medical therapies, surgical approaches, and postoperative care strategies in light of contemporary literature.
