Abstract
After global financial scandals, regulatory authorities introduced several reforms to increase transparency and improve the communicative value of audit reports. One of the most important reforms requires auditors to report the most significant matters encountered during the audit under a separate heading in the audit report. Within this framework, the International Auditing and Assurance Standards Board (IAASB) issued ISA 701, which introduced the concept of Key Audit Matters (KAM). Similarly, in the United States, the Public Company Accounting Oversight Board (PCAOB) introduced the concept of Critical Audit Matters (CAM) within AS 3101. Both regulations aim to improve the transparency of audit reports and provide financial statement users with more insight into the audit process. In particular, they highlight the areas that required significant auditor attention and professional judgment during the audit. Although the objectives of the two standards are largely similar, differences may arise due to the different regulatory environments in which they are applied. These differences become more visible when a company operates under both regulatory frameworks and publishes audit reports in more than one jurisdiction. In such cases, auditors may address similar audit risks but present them in different ways depending on the applicable reporting framework. Therefore, the main purpose of this study is to examine and compare Key Audit Matters and Critical Audit Matters disclosed in audit reports prepared under different regulatory regimes.
