Studies on Ottoman demography are generally conducted on a small scale due to the raw form and vastness of the available data. Such research allows for an in-depth examination of specific regions and, over time, contributes to the formation of significant datasets for broader historical assessments. Building on this approach, the present study aims to analyze the demographic and ethnic composition of the Akkirman sancak throughout the sixteenth century. It also seeks to situate Akkirman within the larger narrative of demographic expansion observed in the Ottoman and Mediterranean worlds during this period, by means of a localized investigation. The study focuses on the population and ethnic structures of Akkirman’s urban center and its rural hinterland from the early decades of the sixteenth century to its end. One of its central objectives is to compare the population levels of the town and countryside and to explore how they changed over time. Another key concern is to identify the ethnic groups that constituted the population and to determine their spatial distribution across the region. Ultimately, this study aims to offer a coherent and comprehensive overview of Akkirman’s population and ethnic structure in the sixteenth century.

Osmanlı demografisine dair incelemeler verilerin ham hali ve büyüklüğü nedeniyle küçük ölçekli yürütülmektedir. Bu çalışmalar bir bölgeye dair derinlemesine bakmaya imkan verir ve zamanla genel değerlendirmeler için önemli veri havuzları meydana getirir. Bu çalışma söz konusu yaklaşımdan hareketle XVI. yüzyıl boyunca Akkirman sancağının demografik ve etnik yapısını inceleme amacını taşımaktadır. Ayrıca çalışma büyük bir anlatı olan Osmanlı ve Akdeniz dünyasındaki nüfus patlamasını yerel ölçekli inceleme niyetindedir. XVI. yüzyılın erken dönemlerinden, yüzyılın sonlarına kadar Akkirman’ın merkez ve kırsal alanlarındaki nüfus ve etnik yapısına odaklanmaktadır. Kent ve kırsal alanlardaki nüfusun karşılaştırılması ve dönemsel olarak uğradığı değişimler çalışmanın ana konularından yalnızca biridir. Etnik unsurların kimlerden meydana geldiği ve bölgelere dağılımı ne düzeyde olduğu çalışmanın bir diğer konusudur. Çalışma Akkirman’ın XVI. yüzyıldaki nüfusuna ve etnik yapısına dair derli toplu bilgi verme amacını gütmektedir.
