Abstract
Objective: Although motor performance, proprioception, and kinesiophobia in individuals with chronic ankle instability (CAI) have been studied separately, comprehensive research examining these parameters collectively with postural awareness is limited. This study aimed to investigate the relationships among motor performance, proprioception, and kinesiophobia in CAI, based on postural habits and awareness. Methods: Forty individuals with CAI (20 women, 20 men) participated in this cross-sectional study. Postural awareness was assessed with the Postural Habits and Awareness Scale (PHAS), proprioception with joint position sense tests, motor performance with motor performance tests, and kinesiophobia with the TAMPA Scale for Kinesiophobia. Results: On the symptomatic side, postural awareness was negatively correlated with dorsiflexion joint position sense error (r = –.297, p = .007), while postural habits were minimally positively correlated with plantar flexion error (r = .293, p = .008). Total PHAS scores were minimally negatively correlated with Y-Balance Test scores on both symptomatic (r = –.236, p = .035) and non-symptomatic sides (r = –.250, p = .025). Moreover, postural awareness showed a minimal positive correlation with TAMPA kinesiofobia scores (r = .262, p = .019). Conclusion: These findings indicate that CAI should be considered not only in terms of mechanical and sensory deficits but also in relation to postural awareness, underlining its multidimensional nature. Postural awareness should be included in the evaluation of CAI, and further studies with larger samples are recommended.
