Abstract
The type and severity of a child’s disability and the level of required care affect not only the child but also families and other caregivers involved in the caregiving process. This situation leads to multidimensional needs among caregivers; parents of children with special needs experience higher levels of mental health problems compared to parents of typically developing children, their psychological well-being decreases as caregiving burden increases, and access to information emerges as one of their most fundamental needs following diagnosis. Families face various challenges in home and school settings, including self-care, social life, educational opportunities, transportation, and social acceptance. Social support stands out as a critical protective factor in maintaining and strengthening psychological well-being, enhancing individuals’ coping capacities, and supporting social adaptation. In this context, school health nurses play a key role as essential healthcare professionals who support families during the care processes of students with special needs, assess social and psychosocial needs, and plan appropriate referrals and preventive health services. In this review, a literature search was conducted using the PubMed, Web of Science, and Google Scholar databases. The search was guided by key concepts related to the needs of caregivers of school-attending individuals with special needs, perceived social support, and the roles of school health nurses. National and international studies directly relevant to the topic were included in the review, while duplicate, out-of-scope, or indirectly related publications were excluded. The findings were synthesized and interpreted from the perspectives of public health and school health nursing.
