Abstract
This study aims to provide an in-depth exploration of the career trajectories, undergraduate experiences, affective states, conceptualizations of the ideal educator, and occupational commitment of Social Studies education graduates navigating the precarity of employment uncertainty. Employing a qualitative research paradigm, the study utilized a phenomenological design. The study cohort comprises eight Social Studies teachers who had not yet been appointed by the Ministry of National Education. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews and analyzed using thematic analysis. The analysis yielded six overarching themes: Career Choice at the Intersection of Idealism and Structural Imperatives, The Gap Between Academic Training and Professional Practice, Invalidation and Psychosocial Attrition, Coping Mechanisms and Future Aspirations, A Visionary Teaching Understanding Beyond the System, and The Erosion of Occupational Vocation in the Wake of Employment Precarity. Findings indicate that while protracted employment uncertainty generates profound hopelessness, anxiety, stress, and feelings of worthlessness among participants, they concurrently preserve an ideal pedagogical framework centered on student-centeredness and digital proficiency, alongside the development of multifaceted coping strategies. Drawing upon these empirical insights, the study advocates for the establishment of psychosocial support mechanisms for prospective educators, the cultivation of systemic transparency and predictability within employment protocols, and the updating of undergraduate curricula to integrate alternative career planning trajectories.
