Abstract

This study aims to determine the general trends, methodological preferences, and conceptual focal points of Turkey-based peace education research. Designed within the framework of the qualitative research paradigm using a descriptive content analysis design, 48 articles retrieved from the Web of Science (WoS) and DergiPark databases were accepted as the primary units of analysis. The reviewed publications were systematically analyzed across various variables, such as publication year, research model, data collection tools, sample characteristics, and thematic orientations. The research findings indicate that the peace education literature in Turkey peaked particularly in 2016 (n=8) and heavily relied on qualitative research models (68.8%). It was determined that the most frequently utilized data collection tool was the semi-structured interview form (29.4%), the most preferred data analysis method was content analysis (27%), and the most intensely studied participant group consisted of pre-service teachers (24%). Thematically, the literature was found to be highly concentrated in the area of "Conceptual Awareness and Perception Levels" (f=12), while the results clustered around the theme of "Cognitive Schemas and Conceptual Transformations" (f=13), which shifts participants' perceptions of peace from a mere "absence of war" to a framework of "social justice and tolerance." Comparative analyses with the global literature revealed that while Turkey-addressed studies demonstrate a methodological parallelism with global mainstream debates, concepts such as "critical pedagogy" and "social justice" still have a relatively limited representation in the local literature. Consequently, to foster the development of the local literature, this study recommends encouraging longitudinal and mixed-method research to ensure methodological diversity, implementing a curriculum transformation centered on "positive peace" and critical pedagogy rather than a sole focus on conflict resolution, supporting teachers through practical training, and implementing a "whole-school approach" to overcome the systemic resistance created by the competitive, exam-oriented education system.
