Abstract

Union density refers to the ratio of union-member wage and salary employees to total wage and salary employees and is regarded as one of the main indicators used to measure the numerical prevalence of union organization. This study examines whether a significant change occurred in the long-term trend of union density in Türkiye after Law No. 6356 on Trade Unions and Collective Bargaining Agreements. The period of more than a decade since the law entered into force makes it possible to evaluate the post-6356 period not only in terms of short-term changes but also in terms of trend changes emerging over time. In the literature, Law No. 6356 has mostly been addressed through its legal and institutional dimensions, while empirical studies examining the long-term trajectory of union density in the period following its enactment have remained limited. To contribute to this gap, this study applies interrupted time series analysis using annual data for the 1984–2024 period. The main model is constructed based on the 2014 break indicated by the Bai-Perron multiple structural break test, and robustness analysis is conducted using models beginning in 2012 and 2013. The findings show that, rather than an immediate and strong level jump after Law No. 6356, union density experienced a gradual and positive trend change.
