Abstract

The competitive strategies that constitute the focus of this article encompass the fun-damental paths and choices a firm follows in order to achieve a sustainable advantage over its rivals within its industry. Through these strategies, firms reduce their costs, differentiate themselves, and concentrate on specific customer segments, thereby demonstrating superior performance in the market and industry compared to their competitors. The most significant contribution to the systematic and academic concep-tualization of this framework was made by the American scholar Michael E. Porter. In his Five Forces Model, Porter demonstrated—through numerous sectoral and market examples—that the level of competition within an industry is determined by the threat of new entrants, rivalry among existing competitors, the threat of substitute products, and the bargaining power of buyers and suppliers. Within this framework, he empha-sized that firms must effectively employ generic competitive strategies—namely cost leadership, differentiation, and focus—in order to gain competitive advantage. Fur-thermore, in addressing competitive advantage at the international level, Porter devel-oped models based on factor conditions (such as the quality of skilled labor, infrastruc-ture, technology, and knowledge resources), demand conditions (the nature and so-phistication of domestic demand), related and supporting industries (strong suppliers and cluster structures), and firm strategy, structure, and rivalry (managerial practices and the intensity of domestic competition). Drawing on numerous international exam-ples, he provided strategic recommendations for firms. In this article, these elements are examined in detail in the order presented above.
